Sometimes you find inspiration from external sources… Pinterest, blogs, magazines, etc. But every so often you find some of the most beautiful inspiration in a place you frequently forget about.

{In your own heart}

These are two of my favorite self portraits that I’ve taken as part of one of my personal projects this year. I love the inspiration they’ve brought me, and the ideas that these two photos have sparked for future clients and sessions.

There are so many elements that I love about this session! Jessica is one of my fabulous makeup artists, and she and her friend approached me this summer about doing their own sessions as wedding gifts for each of their soon-to-be husbands. We schemed a way to sneak it past their significant others and crossed our fingers that we could pull off the surprise.

The session was held in September in a beautiful room at the gorgeous Grand Hotel in downtown Minneapolis. I couldn’t have asked for much more… stunning women, scads of lingerie and amazing shoes, and the incredible natural light helped too!

Fast forward to October when these two ladies flew to Jamaica for their weddings {this Minnesota girl is just a tad jealous of that, by the way} and surprised each of their husbands with their own fabulous album. They were in LOVE. That? That’s the best part of all of this. I love hearing the stories that come back to me about that awesome moment when the photos are first seen. That’s what this is all about, and it makes my heart swell with pride and happiness.

Congratulations on your amazing wedding, Jessica!! And a huge thank you for letting me share your gorgeous photos!

This might be one of the only sessions that I’m not going to babble on and on about, and it’s not because I don’t have a lot to say!

This is Nicky’s second session with me, and if you’re really curious you can view some of my favorites from her first gorgeous boudoir session. So the only thing that I’m going to say is that I love this woman. She’s sassy and amazing, she’s not afraid to let who she is shine through, and she has one of the biggest hearts I’ve ever seen. I had an absolute blast shooting with her, and I’m already hoping that we can keep this annual tradition going next year!

Jessica is the self-defined artisan and creative director behind her company, and she strives to really turn each woman she works with into a true masterpiece. She was named Minneapolis Makeup Artist of the year in 2011 and has been featured in the local news for her outstanding talents.

Because we work so closely together, I wanted you to have the opportunity to get to know a little more about her and the methodology behind her work!

When did you first realize that you wanted to become a makeup artist and how did you get started?

“I was 10 years old, and I just started playing around with makeup! As I got older I would do my friend’s makeup for dances and parties, and after high school I landed a job as a counter manager at Macy’s for Benefit cosmetics which eventually launched me into my professional career.”

What kind of training and experience do you have?

“I’m mostly self-taught, but have attended seminars put on by Benefit cosmetics and Jane Iredale.”

Your motto is “Prepare for Battle”, can you tell me a little more about that?

“Every day is a battle out there, especially in today’s society as a woman. Prepare for battle represents how I will not only make you look beautiful, but feel beautiful so that you are prepared to face whatever life throws your way.”

How do you keep up with current trends?

“My guilty pleasures are Allure and Vogue magazines. I pick one of each up every month and browse the trends to find my own personal inspiration that I can apply towards each individual woman that I work with.”

What is your favorite current fashion trend?

“Skinny jeans with peep-toe pumps!”

Where do you find inspiration?

“The 1940′s time period, bright abstract art, blended with current fashion trends.”

What is your favorite look to create?

“Definitely 1940′s pin up. While I love bold, crazy, and creative makeup, I love how simple makeup was in the 1940′s. I love the red lips and crisp eyeliner. It’s sassy and seductive without overdoing it.”

What do you like most about makeup for boudoir sessions?

“I can really show off my creative side and push my own skills to create incredibly fun looks for each client.”

What other types of events do you provide services for?

“Weddings, special events, runway, individual makeup lessons, personal shopping, and girls night out parties!”

What is the biggest beauty mistake that women make?

“Wearing the wrong shade of foundation and the wrong shade of bronzer.”

Can you give me one quick beauty tip?

“When applying eye shadow: Always do your eye makeup before applying any other makeup to your face. Then once your shadow is applied, use a cotton ball with makeup remover to clean up any powder that falls below your eyes. You’ll get a clean and crisp eye every time.”

Because I’m nosy… can you tell me what’s in your purse right now?

“MAC lip gloss, Bobbi Brown blotting papers, hair ties, my wallet, chewing gum, and Q-Tips.”

Last question. If you could only use one makeup product, what would it be?

“Mascara!”

I couldn’t help myself – there are so many gorgeous images from yesterday’s session with Nicky that I had to share a quick sneak peek this morning!

I’m so excited to spend the week working on these incredible photos, and I really can’t wait to share the rest!!

Keep your eyes open…

I’ll make this part of the story short for your sake. But basically, as we were randomly discussing our own photography businesses, my friend Jessica introduced me to the world of boudoir photography, and ultimately to The Boudoir Divas. I was cautious at best. Just the thought of viewing photographs of someone in lingerie {or even nude} made me blush. But I took her word for it and decided to take a peek.

The moment I opened their online portfolio, I found myself instantly smitten. The photographs were stunning, and beautiful women that were oozing confidence filled my screen. These photographs were filled with luscious colors, moody lighting, and stunning poses that made each woman look like a supermodel.

I suddenly realized that I wanted to look like that.

I flirted with the subject for quite some time, but never actually did anything about it.

I mean, it’s not like I was going to jump on a plane and fly to California for my own session. {snort} Wouldn’t that be a silly thing to do?

Then the following Valentine’s Day my husband presented me with two gifts. One from him and one from Jess…

In his box was a toy orange airplane.

He had given me a round-trip ticket to visit Jess in San Diego for my birthday.

And then in Jessica’s box was a string of pearls.

She had given me a mini-session with The Boudoir Divas that would take place while I was visiting her.

I planned, and started to get nervous, and planned some more. I must have read the FAQ page from the studio a billion times.

I freaked out a little bit.

What should I wear? I don’t know how to pose. I’m awkward and clumsy. Plus, I felt like I was still carrying around some extra baby weight!

I hiked up my big girl panties and took a trip to Victoria’s Secret. I pulled a dozen different outfits off of the rack and tried them all on. Twice. Then I put them all back and left the store to walk around the mall before going to the second Victoria’s Secret. {Bonus to living 5 minutes from the Mall of America? Two Victoria’s Secrets. Just saying.}

I finally decided on a black and white bustier, a pair of black lace boy shorts, and some black thigh highs. Honestly? The next time I have this opportunity there will be some lots of color involved.

A couple of weeks later, I hopped on a plane and three hours later found myself arriving in sunny San Diego.

We had a blast that weekend. We caught a concert at Anthology, walked up and down the beach, ate as much frozen yogurt as we could handle, and celebrated my birthday with plenty of girly drinks. I almost forgot that in a short amount of time I was going to be standing in front of someone wearing very little.

Monday morning came so quickly.

We arrived at the studio early that morning ready to kick some butt. Er… um… okay, not really. I’m pretty sure I was visibly shaking and trying to not throw up all over myself. Mimosa? Yes, please!!

As I teetered out of the dressing room in my too-tall heels and tried not to fall onto the set, I couldn’t believe how incredibly nervous I was. Let me tell you, there is a huge difference between being behind the camera and in front of it. Huge.

But I did it.

I walked the walk.

The entire experience changed something inside of me. I loved how incredibly sexy I felt, and was amazed at how much confidence it gave me. Flying home that evening with my hair and makeup all done up… I do believe I strutted through airport security. STRUTTED. I didn’t think there was a strutting bone in my body, but after that session I felt like I could conquer the world, one TSA employee at a time.

I knew that this was something that I wanted to do. I wanted to make women feel just like I did that day. I wanted my future clients to feel sexy, hot, gorgeous, beautiful, stunning, confident, etc, etc, etc.

So, I made it happen.

I now spend my days making other women feel amazing about themselves, and guess what? I wouldn’t trade it for any other job in the world.

I met Joslyn over 15 years ago! {How crazy is that?} We grew up only a couple of miles apart from each other and rode the same bus each day, sat next to each other in band class {though she was always chair ahead of me}, and have kept in touch periodically over the years. I did a family session for her and her adorable two children a couple of years ago, and was so thrilled when she jumped at the chance to do a boudoir session with me!

She originally wanted to do the session as a gift for her husband, but she quickly realized that she was doing it for herself and that his enjoyment was just a side benefit.

When I sent her the first sneak peek of her session her response was, “I’m soooooooooooooooooooooo excited! I don’t think I would have ever believed that I would be this pumped about boudoir!”

She continued to fall in love with her images from there, and when it came time to order she couldn’t decide.

I love this line from one of her emails, “You. Are. Amazing. I’ve seriously never dreamed that I would be presented with 51 photos of myself and be so overwhelmed with what to pick. And if anything, it’s great motivation, too, because I want to do this again and look even more awesome with even more fun outfits. I’ll be seeing you again in the future, I’m sure!”

Her session is definitely one of my favorites – we had a blast and captured some gorgeous photographs that she’ll love for years to come.

Joslyn – I love you, your contagious smile, and your amazing drive in life. You are an incredible friend and I foresee many, many wonderful moments together in our future!

This is the second session from February’s boudoir marathon at the Nicollet Island Inn, and it’s by far one at the top of my list of favorite sessions that I’ve had the pleasure of shooting.

Cristina is such a gorgeous woman, and a complete natural in front of the camera. She came prepared with so many great outfits, and I love how each one shows off a little bit of her personality and style.

We really did have a great time while shooting, and it was almost impossible for me to stop when our time was up. I could have kept going for hours! Cristina made the entire session a breeze to shoot, and I ended up with so many amazing photos to show off that it was almost impossible for me to narrow them down for this post. Always a good problem to have!

When I first showed Cristina her session, she said, “Oh goodness, there are too many amazing photos! I don’t want to pick!” and then when she received her order, this was one of the comments in her email to me, “I can’t say enough how appreciative I am of all of the work you did and how comfortable you made my first time doing a boudoir shoot.”

I love warm and fuzzy comments. They make me so incredibly appreciative of what I do, and know that I really am making other women feel incredible about themselves.

I know I say it all the time, but I really do hope that you enjoy the photos from this session as much as I do!
